The Argentina artist Pedro Riva has been as an artist in residence
in art centre Saksala ArtRadius for 3 months. During these months he has
worked on two big projects. The first one is a series of large paintings
on canvas (2.60x4.00 meter) and the other series are collage books.
To be able to work effectively the artist has created his huge
paintings are on the floor of one of the workspaces in the
basement of the art center. This is not a regular way of working for an
artist. It is not possible to have distance to the work. Pedro Riva is
not looking for this common way of art production. His physical
participation in his paintings is related to the way of working of
Jackson Pollock.
He also uses different kind of materials to increase the expression
of the work. The added collages are used in the way as if this is a
painting material and is creating a specific surface on the canvas. His
work is very colorful and creates an own personal world in which the
viewer can be find every time new inspiration.
The series of collage books are remarkable. The original books about
e.g. the first world war are page by page covered with parts from
current promotion material, magazines, paint, etc. The original images
and text are part of the collages and strengthen the impression of the a
world that is past and in the same time current. The pages are the
personal reply of the artist on the content of the book and he creates a
fascinating atmosphere in several layers.
Artist quote: "These canvases mix painting and collage as water with oil. When I
see them it makes me wonder that there is no blood in the author veins,
but synthetic enamel. It is a machine invented by some strange dead
painters’ organization to walk over canvases leaving its veins make all
the work.
On those books I feel some strange force that brings good and evil old
spirits back to life. Now they can have ancient conversations in a
telepathic language transmitted only by the unconscious.
Finland is a place where silence and winter are dark. Behind the same
sun is always shinning."
You are welcome to see these remarkable works by your self.
