ART ENLARGES THE AREA

LUCIEN DEN AREND -FINLAND
Lucien den Arend is a Dutch sculptor who has lived and studied in the US and the
Netherlands. As an expert in organizing art projects and symposiums he has
contributed to the EU project with his expertise to execute the artistic content
of the LABYRINTH.
The forest-LABYRINTH is a unique project within ART ENLARGES THE AREA. The neglected
area with pine trees has been transformed into an inviting place to go in and
find an own way.
The plan for the forest-LABYRINTH has been made very carefully. First the
artists were invited to apply for the first selection. A number of 26 artists
have sent a serious application The selection committee with the chairman Lucien
den Arend has selected three artists to stay for 2 weeks and to investigate the
LABYRINTH area and to make a plan. The artists Irene Anton, Philippe Cusse and
Ulrika Sparre have been in the art center in September 2006.
By making the decision the jury has looked after:
1. the artist’s view on the labyrinth and the artistic quality of it
2. if the idea can be developed and realized,
(is it a more open idea or almost a final idea)
3. what kind of special equipments the artist mentions
in the proposal
4. the expect costs by realization and maintenance
(as far as the application this aspect shows)
The committee is on the whole satisfied with the quality of the applications. The way the artists specified the assignment shows their different views on the phenomenon labyrinth.
Finally Philippe Cusse has been chosen to execute his plan for the LABYRINTH.
Unfortunately he was not able to fulfill the invitation, because he did not
accept the conditions in his signed agreement when started the project.
The artists Irene Anton and Ulrika Sparre were finally invited to co-operate in
building the LABYRINTH.
The expertise of Lucien den Arend has been very important for the quality of the
project and with his experiences it is possible to continue with new parts of
the LABYRINTH project.
