My project proposal for a one-month stay in Finland will be centered around
the opportunity to experience the unique landscape and climate of the area. From
what I understand about Finland I have a sense that the specific qualities of
northern light, and the experience of the landscape, will be fascinating for me
in my investigations of light, space and water and its relationship to drawing.
The way in which the landscape is made up of thousands of lakes, islands and
rivers will give me a perfect opportunity to build on my artistic practice in
which I have investigated the interplay of light and water.
Through my practice I have been exploring ways of mapping a natural trace or
imprint. I want to build upon my ideas from current work and try engage further
with these contradictory ideas of creating an imprint of the immaterial. I will
use graphite, silverpoint, pigment and watercolor mainly to make work mapping
the rhythms present in the atmosphere, the landscape and the seascape. These
drawings will lead into more sculptural installations using real light and water
to further explore their possibilities of mark making. I want to create an
environment for the viewer in which the natural rhythms present in the
atmosphere, and within ourselves, is integrated. I will also use film to record
the passage of time through the change of light and water in rivers and the sea.

I believe an intense period of research at this critical point in my career will
enrich and enhance my practice. Having been researching and gathering
inspiration from the elements and the natural world during my time at
university, it seems the right time for me to collate my ideas and experiences
in an authentic rural environment. It will be provide a broad foundation for the
development of my artistic practice after graduating from art school and moving
into the wider artistic community. During my time in Finland I will continue to
update my blog, which already has a wide readership. This will track and record
my development during the month stay in Finland. On my return to the United
Kingdom, I will put together an exhibition of the work made while in Finland.
